Lesson Introduction
4 Mins
On the board is a question for students to answer as they come into the classroom, asking, "why do we pledge allegiance to the flag everyday at school?"
Students: have students write this down on their notes for the day. As you are settling the class in ask them to share their answers with the person next to them.
As things settle, a discussion will begin.
The answers will be various, and hopefully colorful. Directing the conversation to what pledging allegiance means, and what obligations are unspoken, and spoken, for all to follow when in the United States of America. Explaining, in our country, if called upon, one must serve the military, or attend jury duty. All will pay taxes. Ask them to list other things.
Then linking this to the beginnings of the Feudal society. Europe set up a system where everybody has their duties (they pledge themselves to their duty). Let us find out what they pledge themselves to!

Vocabulary
4 mins
A list of some of the words: Allegiance, Fief, Vassal, Lord.
Writing down the definitions on the board. Writing them out while having students do the same. Make students draw a picture for what the words mean (in general not just in feudal society). Have them act out the words. Allegiance can be hand on the heart, Fief could be somebody farming, Vassal bowing down to somebody, and Lord raising hand up and down pompously resembling the action of telling lesser people to calm down.

Accommodations for English Learners, Struggling Readers and Students with Special Needs
Vocabulary is going to be a concept for all students, including EL and SSN students to grasp.
